In many cultures, full lips are generally regarded as a sign of beauty and attractiveness. They are often associated with femininity, sensuality, and youth. Full and curved lips have a significant impact on the impression we make on others. This procedure gives the face a younger and fresher appearance. It is important to note that this does not refer to so-called oversized “rubber-band lips,” which make the face appear unnatural and unattractive. In aesthetic facial surgery, lip correction and augmentation using hyaluronic acid are the most commonly performed procedures. In addition to injecting fillers such as the aforementioned hyaluronic acid to adjust volume or correct minor asymmetries, there is the option of the so-called Bullhorn Lift. This minimally invasive procedure yields maximum results.

The Bullhorn Lift, also known as an upper lip lift or Bullhorn Lip Lift, is a surgical procedure that can be performed on an outpatient basis under local or regional anesthesia. The goal of the treatment is to visually enlarge and lift the upper lip. With age, the distance between the nose (or the nasal bridge) and the start of the upper lip (or the vermilion border) increases. At the same time, the lips lose significant volume, which is due to the body’s reduced production of hyaluronic acid and collagen. These two changes associated with aging are typical signs of aging, which are also accompanied by a loss of attractiveness. For this reason, this minor surgical procedure has become established in facial surgery.

Upon request, Dr. Münzberg would be happy to show you before-and-after photos of treatments performed at our clinic during a consultation at his office.
An upper lip lift is ideal for people who:
- want to enhance their lips without fillers,
- notice age-related volume loss in the upper lip,
- find the distance between the bridge of the nose and the upper lip bothersome,
- want to correct a narrow upper lip,
- want to show more of their upper teeth when they smile.
The two treatments differ in terms of the method used, how they work, the longevity of the results, the duration of the procedure, the recovery time, and the naturalness of the outcome. Unlike lip augmentation using fillers, the results of a Bullhorn Lip Lift are permanent. Additionally, it is a surgical procedure rather than a minimally invasive one. Consequently, the recovery time is longer. The Bullhorn Lip Lift pursues a different primary goal. While lip augmentation is intended solely to add volume, the Bullhorn Lip Lift aims to shorten the philtrum (the distance between the nose and upper lip), increase the visibility of the lip line, and make the teeth more visible.
1. First, Dr. Münzberg will mark the area of skin to be removed. The incision is made directly under the nose or at the base of the nose. Photographic documentation will be taken to illustrate the before-and-after results.
2. During the approximately 40-minute procedure, a so-called conduction anesthesia, similar to that used by dentists, is administered first. As a result, both the lower nasal area and the entire upper lip are numbed. Additionally, local anesthesia is administered using an anesthetic that contains a vasoconstrictor. As a result, minor bleeding and, in particular, postoperative hematomas are rare.
3. In the third step of the procedure, Dr. Münzberg removes a narrow strip of skin and, if necessary, some muscle tissue from the previously marked area.
4. Tightening and suturing: Following careful hemostasis, the skin is closed using a so-called intradermal suture, in which the non-absorbable suture runs beneath the skin. A dressing with adhesive strips is then applied. This is a clear advantage compared to injecting the lips with fillers, such as hyaluronic acid.
You should not eat or drink for 3 hours after the procedure. In the days following the procedure, vigorous chewing and intense facial expressions are also counterproductive. A follow-up visit to our office is scheduled one day after the procedure. The sutures can be removed after approximately 7 to 10 days. Afterward, the scar should be treated with a silicone gel for eight weeks to ensure that it becomes and remains very fine and barely visible. Even though this is considered a minor procedure, you should refrain from physical activity for at least two to three weeks. You should also avoid saunas, tanning beds, and direct sunlight to prevent disrupting or delaying wound healing. Full healing and the final results of the Bullhorn Lip Lift will be visible after about 3 weeks.
As with any surgical or minimally invasive procedure, you should be aware of potential side effects. Possible side effects of a bullhorn lip lift include impaired wound healing, bleeding, swelling, and bruising, as well as numbness or changes in sensation.
As with almost all cosmetic surgeries, the cost of this procedure cannot be determined on a flat-rate basis, as it depends on the patient’s physical condition and the type of anesthesia used. Following a consultation with Dr. Münzberg, we will provide you with a cost estimate that takes into account your preferences regarding the desired appearance of your upper lip.
