Gynecomastia is a change in the male breast in which the mammary gland and fatty tissue are enlarged and resemble the female breast. The enlargement is usually bilateral, but can also be asymmetrical. In adolescents and during puberty, gynecomastia is not a pathological condition. It usually resolves spontaneously and does not require treatment. In adults, the cause of gynecomastia is often unclear and in most cases requires breast correction surgery at a specialist clinic, such as that of Dr. Münzberg.
Certain groups of patients can develop gynecomastia by taking hormones (anabolic steroids). Other causes can include changes in liver function or taking female hormones (estrogen-containing medications). In very rare cases, a tumor (ulcer), which may be malignant, can also cause gynecomastia and require breast correction. In overweight patients, the cause is often that excessive amounts of female hormones (estrogens) are produced in the fat cells, resulting in gynecomastia. For this reason, weight loss should be attempted before breast correction in men.
Before undergoing breast correction surgery at the clinic of specialist Dr. Münzberg, it is advisable to have your hormone status checked and undergo an examination by a urology specialist. Breast correction in men can be performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia or, if desired, under general anesthesia. During the procedure, either only the glandular tissue behind the nipple is removed through an incision around the nipple, or the glandular tissue is removed by suction alone. In many cases, a combination of both procedures is necessary.
After injecting a so-called tumescent solution (a solution to loosen the fatty tissue, containing a local anesthetic and a medication that constricts the blood vessels), the surrounding fatty tissue and glandular tissue is removed (liposuction). The glandular tissue behind and above the nipple is then removed through an incision around the areola. The remaining scar around the areola is barely visible. After male breast correction surgery at Dr. Münzberg's specialist clinic, it is necessary to wear a custom-made compression vest for 6 weeks. The stitches can usually be removed after 8 to 10 days. Subsequently, scar treatment with a silicone gel is recommended for 12 weeks.
The postoperative pain associated with breast correction surgery for gynecomastia is comparable to mild to moderate muscle soreness and can be treated with painkillers, which we provide to the patient.
Nipple correction can be performed in such a way that the size and shape can be changed. These procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia.
